Issey Miyake Fall/Winter 2014
Nature was a primary source of inspiration for designer Yoshiyuki Miyamae’s “rhythmatic forest” fall collection for Issey Miyake, which used the brand’s signature hand-pleating and “steam stretch” techniques — the process by which computers program steam heat to shrink jacquard fabrics into three-dimensional grooves — to evoke tree rings.
Models emerged on the runway carrying “bags” shaped like half-circles, which they opened and placed flat on the floor to reveal circular piles of fabric. These unfolded into accordion-pleated dresses and jackets that the models slipped over their black shirts and pants to create quick and transformative looks.
A line from the show notes best sums up the overall idea behind the show: “Cloth harbours the power of life: wrap yourself in it and feel an instantaneous metamorphosis into pure joy at the wonder of living.”
I stubbed my toe and naturally I screamed “mOTHERFUCKER” and then my dad poked his head out of the livingroom and said “you rang?”
